Share Six | Curves

This month’s theme is curves.

As usual, I have a plan but don’t get around to it and then I’m scrambling to take pictures. I really wanted to take pictures of a calla lily, however I couldn’t find any at the local florists shops. So these were the next best flowers I could find.

I just love the delicate curves in the petals of the flowers!

Share Six | Painterly

This month’s theme is Painterly. While I didn’t have time to take new images for this challenge, I had fun going through my archives and finding images that were conducive to editing in a painterly style.

This first image is one of my favorite images I’ve taken while kayaking and in one of my favorite places – northern Wisconsin.

This next image is one I took of my daughter when we vacationed in Colorado several years ago.

Another one of my daughter a few years ago in a gorgeous field of black-eyed susans.

This one is a favorite of mine that I took at a senior session of a dear friend and client.

While in Chatanooga a few years back, I took this image of this bridge. Thought it might look nice with a painterly effect.

And another one of my daughter.

Share Six | Shallow Depth of Field

This month’s theme is not that difficult and yet it is. I feel like I almost always shoot with shallow depth of field, so that’s easy. However, I feel that I have exhausted my creativity. I’m not going to lie, this time of year is difficult. I love taking photos of nature, however nature is shedding it’s color and beauty and is entering into a monotone and drabby season. For me there is a lack of inspiration when everything is turning brown and lifeless.

However, once again, I am so thankful for this photography group. It has made me get out and find beauty even in this dreary transitional period of the seasons. I was pleasantly surprised at what interesting things I found and how beautifully they photographed.

Here are my images:

A few of these images are some of my favorites I’ve ever taken of this nature. I’m glad this group gave me the push to get out and capture some beauty and create art. I hope you enjoyed my images.

Share Six | Artificial Light

I chose this month’s theme. As I’ve come along in my photography journey, I’ve come to realize that it’s not always fun having to schedule sessions around times of the day with good lighting, or finding locations with good lighting. I’d get requests for specific locations that just wouldn’t have good light. So, I quickly realized that if I didn’t want to constantly be a slave to good natural light, I’d need to learn to create my own.

I’m not going to lie, it can be a pain lugging around a good light and softbox, but it really is worth it. I can also create unique lighting scenarios, which scratches that creative itch. It’s really fun to brainstorm ways to creatively light a subject.

Here are a few examples of where I’ve used artificial light to create a scene:

Share Six | Macro

April’s theme is macro. This is one genre of photography that I really enjoy and don’t tend to feel is much of a challenge. So this time I decided to use some flashes to create some different lighting and give myself an extra challenge.

I played around with light placement and different methods of diffusing the lights. I tried some backlighting as well as some side lighting and two lights for some images. I also did some shots on a white backdrop and some on a black backdrop. As you can see, the lighting and different backdrop can really change the mood of an image.

Share Six | Double Exposure 2023

So it was my turn to choose the theme this month. I haven’t done double exposures in a while, so I thought that would be a good theme. I really wanted to create some fun shots. However, this time around, I wasn’t as satisfied with my results. As usual, I DID wait until the last minute to work on my images, and being that everything is still brown and dingy too, I just didn’t find much inspiration.

This first image was done in camera.

These next two were done in Photoshop.

And this last one was actually an image I took years ago in camera. We did these theme several years ago, and to this day, this is probably my favorite double exposure image I have ever taken.

Share Six | Intentional Camera Movement

I always find this style of photography difficult. I guess it’s because it doesn’t really appeal to me. It’s just not my style. I do however love how these Share Six challenges really force me to step out of my comfort zone as well as challenge me to create art using a method I don’t really care for.

For these images I just went out in my backyard and did some experimenting.

I hope you enjoyed my images. Continue through the circle. Next up is Elizabeth. You won’t want to miss her lovely images. Click HERE to see her take on this month’s theme.

Share Six | Color

Here we are at the end of another year. Our theme for Share Six is color. We’ve done this theme a few times. I’ve got lots of ideas running through my head, but as usual, I’m swamped with finishing up packaging orders and trying to get our Christmas preparations in order.

So I pulled from some images I took 10 years ago. One thing I loved doing was party planning. I loved planning fun birthday parties for my kids. So in 2012, what with my daughter being super artsy, we planned an art themed birthday party.

Of course I had to create some inspiration pictures and these are some of those images.

Share Six | Intentional

September’s theme is Intentional. I think it’s a great theme and very fitting for where I’m at in life right now. I’ve always tried to be very intentional in everything I do, however I’ve noticed that sometimes I get depressed and then get lazy, or I just lose my focus. Over the last few years I have been sinking into depression. Certain life circumstances have been beating me down. I’ve noticed that I’ve lost motivation in almost every area of my life. Nothing really brings me joy and so I’ve lost the motivation to be intentional.
However I have finally decided that I need to pull myself up by the bootstraps and make myself do things, make myself live life. It may not pull me out of the depression, but it will have to help me in some way.

A few years ago when my son had Lyme disease, we overhauled our diet and our lifestyle. I felt so much better. So that is one thing I have decided to be intentional about again. I’ve started to neglect my health and I want to be intentional about getting back on track.

A few years ago, I started a Facebook group all about living a healthy lifestyle. I wanted to create a community where we could share recipes and share healthy tips. I have recently been heading up some health challenges through my group. For the events, I’ve wanted to have some nice header photos. So those images are my Intentional images.

As is the story of my life, I haven’t been feeling well for the last two weeks and my son just came down with Covid, so I was only able to take two images this month. I’m going to try to get at least one more image tomorrow and then I’ll add it to this post.

This first image is the image I took for my 100 mile walking challenge.

This second image is the image I created for my intermittent fasting challenge.

Share Six | All About Today

All about today…well, I’m not going to lie. Not much has changed since the last few times I’ve blogged. I honestly don’t remember the last time I picked up my camera for a personal project. Life has been absolutely crazy. I do however use my phone a lot to take pictures and document the important moments. As I’ve said before, the best camera to have is the one you have with you. It’s a quotation from someone else, but it’s very true. Maybe next month I’ll finally get my act together and get out my real camera, but for this month’s theme, all of my pictures were taken with my phone.

Here are some pictures from a day of kayaking for me. We kayaked through Mammoth Cave National Park and had quite the adventure. Between a portage that took an hour and a half and someone flipping their kayak and losing their phone and glasses, to an early end to our trip due to rapids. This day was crazy, maddening, hilarious and exhausting. These pictures truly emulate all about today.
